The island of Borneo is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots and a birdwatcher's paradise. Many of its species are rainforest specialists, but such a large island also has widely different habitats attracting a surprisingly wide range of avian visitors. Of particular interest are the more than 30 species that are endemic to Borneo (i.e., found nowhere else in the world). 252 of Borneo's most interesting and spectacular birds are featured in this concise and easy-to-use guide, each species illustrated in full colour and with key information on identification, habitat and distribution. This new edition is fully updated with all the latest names and recently recognised species.

A Photographic Guide to Birds of Borneo Sabah Sarawak Brunei and Kalimantan G W H Davison 9781847738288 Books

This handy little guide covers 252 of the more common species one would encounter on a trip to the island of Borneo. The book starts with an introduction to the island and its avifauna and a guide on how to use the book and a short glossary. There is a whole page that explains the handy corner tabs, a silhouette of each family of birds on a color background for quick reference. Next comes a few pages on the Borneo environment talking about the endemic birds and their habitat and the importance of each of the major environments one would come across in a trip here. There is also a short section on field equipment and a map plus a page on where to find birds in the three major areas, montane, lowland and coastal areas. From page 14 to 139 comes the bulk of the guide which is the identification section. Two species are shown on each page with a good color photograph. A description of habits, habitat and description are also included. There is mention of confusing or similar species and a few notes about voice as well. The last line mentions range and occurrence. Over all this is a handy little guide for someone on a short trip, a novice birder or someone looking to get a general idea of the birds of Borneo, the corner tabs make for a quick reference when flipping through to find a species and there is a handy reference page at the back on further reading. Another big plus is the small size making it ideal to take into the field.

A Photographic Guide to Birds of Borneo Sabah Sarawak Brunei and Kalimantan G W H Davison 9781847738288 Books Reviews

Not a comprehensive guide by any means, this book nevertheless offers valuable info on most of the species an average birder is likely to encounter. There is one major plus behind photos rather than traditional illustrations you get to see habitat. Right off, just by the picture, you know where to find a leafbird in the bright green leaves high up in the canopy; you know the frogmouths will be down low camoflaged with the brown leaves; you get the idea that Bar-winged Flycatcher-Shrikes like palms... despite the fact no specific mention is made in the alongside text of preferred trees.
Basics 1996, softcover, 144 pages, color photos of 252 species, no range maps

Like others of its kind, this compact guide provides color photos for 252 species found on the island of Borneo. This represents about 40% of the nearly 580 birds found here. A fair sampling of the various families is given.

These photos are pretty good for 90% of the birds, despite all of them being somewhat small as necessitated by the size of the book. Just one photo is given for each bird. For the other 10% of the birds, these photos show a pose from behind or below that is not helpful or, a pose that does not show the necessary field marks well enough. Some of the photos are too dark or too distant. A couple of birds are slightly obscured by foliage.

The text is a brief paragraph that focuses primarily on the description of the bird to aid in identification. This will be helpful some of the time. For some birds, a comparison is made to a similar species. Some additional short notes are offered on behavior and habitat.

Use this guide like you should all its similar congeners - only as a practice tool in conjunction with a complete field guide.
